In Farthest Seas doesn't feel like a book written for a reader. It feels like a book written by a lover, for her husband, and only incidentally shared with the rest of us. That makes it a fascinating object, a private moment made public, but it also keeps it at arm's length. Interesting more than enjoyable. If you're drawn to quiet, tender stories, you might find something in it. Just don't expect it to meet you halfway.
